Marionettes are a colorful part of Sicilian heritage. Dating from around the 13th century, L’Opera deî Pupi (Opera of the puppets) originates in the “singers of tales,” (cantasori), similar to the troubadors of other European traditions. The tradition of puppet theater is alive and well in modern day Sicily. In fact, Dolce and Gabbana based their Spring 2013 collection on the colorful traditions of Sicilian pony carts and marionettes.
