The traditional first trip to Italy typically includes the cities of Rome, Florence, and Venice. When we do Custom Italy Tours, we tailor the trip to fit the interests of the traveler. For example, perhaps you would like to visit the Amalfi Coast and Pompeii, but you also have a passion to see some great art. We might suggest that you add Florence to your itinerary.
Florence, the Cradle of the Renaissance, is surely the Italian city for art lovers. The Uffizi gallery is second only to the Louvre as a treasury of the world’s great art. Botticelli’s Birth ofVenus and Primavera are housed here, as well as works by Leonardo da Vinci, Cimabue, Raphael, Michelangelo, Titian, Caravaggio, and other greats. Here are two examples of its holdings:
Michelangelo’s David and other works can be seen at the Accademia in Florence.
The Cathedral of Florence is a stunning architectural achievement. The facade, pictured above, glows with rose, white, and green marble. The apse is capped by Brunelleschi’s famous dome. The side and dome of the cathedral are seen in the photo below. Click on this link for a short video of the story behind the dome.
In addition to the art and architecture, there are many other delights to explore, including strolling through the Piazza della Signoria in the evening and listening to whatever musicians happen to be playing nearby, discovering the gold shops on the Ponte Vecchio or visiting the Gallileo Museum.
